Are you demoralized by the news on our national front? You're not alone, but we don’t want to be a group who do nothing but complain! Here's your chance to act, taking steps towards change.
Below we’ve highlighted a large area of great concern. My hope is you’ll understand the issues better and take action via the options below.
FEDERAL BILLS
Four bills sit before Parliament that, in the words of John Carpay, of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedom, could turn us “into a police state by Christmas”.
These bills expand the powers of the state, increase surveillance and censorship, and threaten to criminalize emotion.
A very short summary of each is provided below, but please read Chris George’s more in-depth outline here (only a 7 minute read).
*Bill C-8 Gives the Minister of Industry the power to cut off access to the internet if they deem you ‘a threat’.
*Bill C-9 This is probably the most frightening bill, because it seeks to criminalize the emotion of “hate”. Here's their wildly subjective definition of hatred (by which you could be charged), "the emotion that involves detestation or vilification and that is stronger than disdain or dislike". This bill is a dire threat to free speech.
*Bill C-2: This has now been tamed down to Bill, C-12. In its original form, however, it contained wild overreach whereby the government could access your private information without warrant. The change came about specifically because of massive public outcry, from both citizens and organizations. Regardless, the original Bill C-2 speaks loudly to the intent of our present government.
Bruce Pardy, a friend of Free to Fly, speaks to these bills in an interview, here.
In Chris George’s summary he closes with “It is time for all Canadians to speak out – while there is still time, while we are still able.” Hear, hear!
